10 essential tips to save energy at home

Today we’re excited to share some practical and straightforward tips to help you save energy at home. These tips will not only help you cut your energy bill, they’ll also help you care for the environment.

Smart lighting

Let’s kick off with something basic yet highly effective: swap out your traditional bulbs for LED lights. LED lights use a lot less energy and last much longer, so they’re a really worthwhile investment. And get into the habit of turning off the lights when you leave a room. It sounds simple, but it can make a big difference.

Use natural light as much as possible

Why not let the sunlight into your home? Open the curtains during the day to maximise natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Plus, there’s nothing better than sunlight to lift your spirits and create a cosy ambience in your home.

Efficient appliances

When you’re looking to buy a new appliance, check the energy efficiency label. A more efficient appliance will consume less energy without sacrificing performance. And remember, always unplug appliances when you’re not using them: even in standby mode, some still consume energy.

Temperature control

It’s important to keep your home at a comfortable temperature, but that doesn’t have to mean using an excessive amount of energy. Instal a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature automatically according to your schedule and needs. Also, be sure to seal any air leaks around doors and windows to avoid unnecessary loss of heat (or cold).

Cook smart

Cooking efficiently can significantly reduce energy  consumption. Use lids on pots to retain heat, cook with appropriately sized pots and pans so as not to waste energy, and consider using more energy-efficient appliances such as the microwave or slow cooker instead of the oven.

Smart Washing

Your washing machine and dishwasher make life much easier, but they can also consume a lot of energy, especially if not used correctly. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible and run full loads to maximize efficiency. With the dishwasher, skip the pre-rinsing by hand.

Insulation and ventilation

Good insulation can make a big difference in your energy bill. Make sure your home is well insulated to maintain warmth in winter and coolness in summer. Also, don’t underestimate the effect of ventilation in summer: keep windows closed during the hottest part of the day to shut the warm air out and open them when it’s cooler outside.

Turn off and unplug

Did you know that electronic devices consume energy even when turned off? To prevent so-called standby power consumption, turn off devices completely when not in use and, if possible, unplug them. This will not only save energy but will also reduce the risk of fires caused by short circuits.

Renewable energies

If you are in a position to do so, consider investing in renewable energy for your home, such as solar panels. The initial installation may be expensive, but it will save you a significant amount on your electricity bills in the long run and will also reduce your carbon footprint. Plus, it feels great to generate your own clean, green energy.
