How to create a study area for the kids

Pass with flying colours with our tips for creating a perfect study area for your home

The kids have grown and are no longer the toddlers they once were that needed clear spaces without obstacles and boxes at their height to reach their toys. As the kids get older they begin to need a room that is appropriate to their age, a more functional space with a large desk for the computer and storage spaces for their books and coursework. In brief, a study area where they can concentrate on their tasks, do their homework and unleash their creativity.

Regardless of the size of the room, the most important considerations when creating a study area are that it is quiet, tidy, has natural sunlight and good ventilation and maintains a comfortable temperature.

The decoration and organisation of the study area vary depending on the age of the child, but certain aspects should always be present such as ergonomic chairs, a desk of the right height, and chests of drawers or storage spaces within the child’s reach.

Not only should the age of the students be taken into account, but also the layout of the space, rooms and places where we will begin to put the various elements that will comprise the perfect study area. In our homes in Conde Orgaz, Méndez Álvaro and Legazpi adults and children will find 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes in which to create a study area. But that’s not all, in addition our residential developments have large communal areas, parks and gardens where the students can relax after their hours of study.

If you are going to start a new life and are thinking about how to organise a study area for the kids, these ideas will allow you to graduate with honours.

Key points for creating a study area in the kids’ bedroom

  1. Good lighting. Make sure the study area is located below or next to a window so it receives indirect natural light. If you don’t have a source of natural light, use a floor or desk lamp that gives warm light.
  2. Keep the walls clear and minimalist. Walls full of posters and photos are no longer in fashion. Use light colours and clean walls to improve concentration.
  3. Appropriate chairs and a desk at the right height. Furniture should be adapted to the height of the child. You could choose adjustable furniture that can be adapted as the child grows. It is important to have an ergonomic and adjustable chair that supports the child’s frame.
  4. Keep it tidy. Make sure to have good storage space so the desk is uncluttered. Buy drawers and shelves so school material is neatly arranged and easy to reach when required. A cluttered space will annoy you and won’t allow your child to do their work.
  5. Good ventilation. Be it summer or winter, hot or cold, your children’s study area should be well ventilated and at the right temperature so they are able to concentrate and feel comfortable.
