Why having plants in your home improves your quality of life

Let’s welcome spring! One of our favourite times of year has arrived, the time for decorating every corner of our homes with flowers and plants, not just because they bring joy and a sense of vigour into the home but also because of the benefits derived from having plants in the home.

Benefits of having plants in your home

They improve air quality

Plants are known for their ability to purify the air. During photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. Some plants are also very efficient at removing volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene, from the atmosphere. These compounds are commonly found in household items such as paints, carpets, furniture and cleaning products. NASA has studied the effects of plants on the air in indoor environments and has identified a number of plants that are especially effective in cleaning the air, notably Ficus and Espatifilo, which are also perfect for indoor spaces such as our homes in Aldaia (Valencia).

They reduce stress

The presence of plants in your home can lower stress and anxiety. Plants provide a calmer, more relaxed environment, which can help reduce stress levels. And taking care of plants is a relaxing activity in itself. Since ancient times, gardening has been used as a therapy and for treating emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety.

They boost productivity

Having plants in your place of work or study can boost your productivity and concentration. A study by the University of Exeter found that people were 15% more productive in natural environments that included flowers or plants than in environments without them. Having plants in work environments can also reduce visual and mental fatigue, so people are better able to concentrate.

They improve mental health

Having plants in your home can improve your mental and emotional health. Studies have shown that people who look after their houseplants and engage in gardening activities feel closer to nature and experience reassurance in mind and body. Taking care of plants or simply looking at them can trigger emotions such as peacefulness and contentment.

Flowering plants are better for mental health, as their bright colours make us feel happier and less stressed. They also enhance the decoration of homes such as ones we have in Las Palmas, adding the perfect touch of colour.

They absorb noise and bad smells

A very remarkable feature of plants, especially the leafier varieties, is that they can absorb noise from the environment. Similarly, plants help remove bad smells and keep rooms at an optimal level of humidity, thus benefitting the environment and the people who live in it.

By regulating the relative humidity indoors, they have beneficial effects on the skin.

They liven up the environment

Decorating indoor and outdoor spaces with plants creates lively, harmonious environments with positive vibes and forges a connection between indoors and outdoors.

Houseplants don’t just adorn a home—they add to the quality of life of the people who live in it, providing a range of benefits for their health and their physical and mental well-being.
